The Darling Berlin film “Junk Space Berlin” by Juri Padel celebrates its cinema premiere today at the Kulturbrauerei cinema in Prenzlauer Berg. The film’s score was written and composed by Tomomi Inoue and Nicholas (Nick) Klein and published by UCP.ONE.

The critically acclaimed science fiction film about a mysterious rift that runs through Berlin has already been compared to “Run Lola Run” by Tom Tykwer from 1998, among others, in terms of its significance for German film. According to Filmdienst: “Juri Padel invents Berlin like Tom Tykwer once did, or like Wong Kar-Wai once invented Shanghai or Hong Kong.”

The cinema premiere will take place on Thursday, 21 September 2023, at the Kulturbrauerei cinema in Berlin at 8 pm. The film will then be shown at selected screenings throughout Germany.

Junk Space Berlin” is a bizarrely provocative film that resembles a hallucination during a Berlin club night. Director Juri Padel portrays Berlin, which is divided by an inexplicable “rift”, as a metaphor for the former East-West divide. In this post-apocalyptic city, various characters, including hackers, preppers and musicians, search for a mysterious female musician. The film is characterised by visual glitches and has a hallucinogenic tone.

Despite the lack of a traditional plot, the viewer is guided through a world between digital and analogue, reality and illusion. The narrative is supported by lively acting performances that are strongly reminiscent of theatre.

The narrative plays with contemporary times and discourses, including socio-political commentary. “Junk Space Berlin” conveys a sense of loss and distance from the present. In the end, the question of identity and place remains in the darkness of Berlin.
